HPV or Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of viruses that can cause infections, such as genital warts and some cancers in both men and women.

HPV can be transmitted through genital skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity or by sharing contaminated sex toys.

Types of HPV Vaccines

9-valent vaccine (Gardasil 9) - Protects against HPV type 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58 (Available in PULSE Clinic 7 days a week)

Genital Warts are mainly associated with HPV Types 6 and 11.

HPV-related cancer such as cervical, anal, vaginal, penile, oral, and vulvar cancers are mainly associated with HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58

 

Who Should Get the Gardasil 9 Vaccine?

1. Adolescents and Young Adults

  • Girls and Boys Ages 9-14: The Gardasil 9 vaccine is most effective when administered before the onset of sexual activity. We recommend it for preteens and teens to provide protection during the early stages of their sexual health.
  • Catch-Up Vaccination for Ages 15-26: If you missed the vaccine series during your younger years, it’s still beneficial to receive it. Gardasil 9 can be administered up to age 26 to help protect against HPV.

2. Adults Ages 27-45

  • Extended Protection: While the vaccine is primarily recommended for younger individuals, adults aged 27 through 45 who have not been previously vaccinated may also benefit from Gardasil 9. This group can still receive protection against HPV types that could lead to cancers and genital warts.

3. Individuals with Risk Factors

  • Those with Multiple Sexual Partners: People with multiple or new sexual partners may have a higher risk of HPV infection. The Gardasil 9 vaccine can offer protection.
  • Individuals with Weakened Immune Systems: Those with conditions or treatments that weaken the immune system, such as HIV or chemotherapy, may benefit from the vaccine to enhance their protection against HPV-related diseases.

How the Vaccine is Administered?

Gardasil 9 is given as a series of 2 or 3 doses, depending on your age at the time of the first dose:

  • Ages 9-14: Two doses are typically administered 6-12 months apart.
  • Ages 15-45: Three doses are given over a 6-month period.
